Step 4: Developing Your Strength Plan
THIS CHAPTER FOCUSES ON WHAT I LIKE TO CALL YOUR STRENGTH PLAN.
In this chapter, I help you identify what skills you need to include in your daily life to help strengthen your mind, body, and soul.
We live in a society that loves achievement, qualifications, status, and success. Many people work extremely hard to get there–ignoring what their bodies and minds are telling them. But what’s the point of success and a great career if you’re always stressed, overwhelmed, don’t see much of your family and friends, or you’re simply grumpy/tired when you actually do see them?
Sadly, life balance and self-care are often seen as “soft” requirements–something high achievers don’t (or shouldn’t) need. We get the message we should just be able to soldier on through illness and stress. We are told that if we take a holiday, go on a city break, have a bubble bath, or sleep in on Sundays, that we aren’t being very productive. After all, a successful person should have this under control. Too much self-care is a sign of weakness, or perhaps seen as selfish or indulgent.
For anyone seeking to live a healthy and sustainable life, one vital habit is self-care. When we are living lives filled with activity, noise, and hurry, it is incredibly difficult to feel healthy and rested. When that is our overall experience with life, the result is that we become stressed and burned out. In order to nurture the health of our mind, body, and soul, we need to re-center and restore. We need these in short spurts throughout the day, as well as in longer stretches of time as needed. The thing about self-care is that it is a practice that requires you choosing to do it. It will not happen unless you intentionally make space for it. But the result is worth the effort.
You are enough. You have the ability to dream any dream and follow it, and live your best life possible.
